Many a mile to go...

awake

weather: awake
song: ChrisThileDVDyey!

Ow.

My fingers had damn well better get callouses soon. Otherwise I'll be in pain for months.

For those of you who don't know this, I have a mandolin. A style, so technically not what I'd want for bluegrass--it's the teardrop shape, whereas the F style has the curlycue at the top and is a little thinner and has a bit of extra room for higher frets on the E string.

But still. I gots a mandoln.

And Chris Thile is teaching me how to play. ...Okay, so it's via a DVD, but still, he's teaching me how to play.

Heeeeeeeee.

This DVD is old. NC's first CD hadn't been out yet, 'cause he's talking about how Ode to a Butterfly "will be on the forthcoming Nickel Creek CD."

But yersh. I have a mandolin, a teaching DVD, a chord book, and three books of music.  After I've practiced some, I'll let you know how I'm coming skillwise. 'Cause believe me, I have a strange set of bad habits and good instincts.

bound to write

Once I get really good. Okay. I'll go hunting that parallel dimension now.

No, seriously... I'm probably not ever gonna be half that good. ...Or at least not for at least a year. It's just... incredibly unlikely. *Brightly* Won't stop me from plunking away, though!

Monty Python: Make tea

I have faith! XD well I mean if you practice at it a looot I'm sure you'll get good. :3

PS: while college visiting you should come try Duke University because it's cool and in NC, and I know that's not AMAZING, but hey. Duke's a pretty darn good school. :33

high school

Oh, I'll try to practice a lot--just at the moment my finger tips are complaining vociferously. *Mutters at them* Callous, damn you!

PS: Unfortunately, we already set our schedule--a couple days in Boston, some in New York, and a day trip down to Philly. I know Duke's a great school, but I think I'm gonna have to stay north of Virginia if I can possibly manage it. Too long spent in the south and all that. *Huggles* It was just out of the way, otherwise I'd've tried to come and pop in for a surprise visit. Really. When we were thinking a car trip, I actually told my parents we'd do it if we drove. But we're not driving, so. *Sits on*

wolf: *sigh*

Awwwh. -pout- Well I understand why you'd want to stay north of Virginia.
(btw, check out St. John's college if you haven't already. it's this really weirdcool liberal arts college in Annapolis, MD)

...-grumblegrumble I wish North Carolina was cooler grumble-

QI: Alan knows

Reed is the one where they have a required learning of the Classics (and they have this thing where for 10 days a year, they don't have academic classes but instead let everyone conduct classes from "under water basket weaving" to "inside the animal's mind" to "tree-sitting 101")

St. John's is where like you don't have ANY textbooks- all classes are a "forum" type of talking, the teacher just mediates the discussion, and you just read the "great" books, like by greek people and darwin and the bible and whateverelse. You learn math, music, literature, Greek (first two years, French second two years), science, but it's ALL From the "great" books and discussion.

The only downside is that you only get one degree- a B.A. in Liberal Arts, but alumni go on to get Ph.D's a lot of the time, and it's like one of the top colleges whose alumni get Ph.D's and go to top postgrad colleges.

...CRAZINESS. :3

Book fetish

Ah. I dunno. I've already got a list of places I'm applying, mostly places with stellar physics departments--it's sort of the requirement when you're me. *Grins a bit* That, and I've decided categorically that I'm applying ED to Columbia, and since they accept 75% of their ED applicants and I am not that stupid... I'll hopefully be going there.

And you! When're you gonna be visiting New England colleges? 'Cause if you're in New York in July, you HAVE TO TELL ME.

Jeeves: Has lots of talents.

(Reed is the only college with a student-run nuclear reactor on campus.. -shifty eyes-)

XD yeah, I understand though. woo, columbia! My best friend's boyfriend is gonna be there in a year (he's deferring for a year to go to Germany), so maybe you'll know him! ^^ You two would probably get along well.

Umm.. well I'm gonna be goin'ta visit Barnard, so if I can fudge it in July somewhere I'll be sure to tell you :3

(*Amused look* I'll keep it in mind.)

Oh, that would be so much with the fun thing... Here's to hoping, yes?

Oh yes, do. *Grins* Any day after July 1 and it's all cool. Oh, goody goody gumdrops. (Ignore my insanity, please.)

...And Barnard's a reallyreally good school... */Lobbying*
